the good times...

Big thanks to my buddy, Paul, for hooking me up with a free ticket to Modest Mouse last night at the Edgefield. Great show. It was my second time to see them and they've received quite a bit of publicity since. There was definately an annoying-teenage-girl contingent, but they played their most "popular" songs up front and rocked a healthy mix of older and newer, more obscure tunes for the rest of the show. It was wild to see Johnny Marr of the Smiths with them. He'd been flying from England to Portland to write songs with the band during recording and joined up shortly thereafter. What a combo?!

Tour de Fat
The weekend is here once again. Don't have much on tap this weekend, just sort of lounging and some housekeeping type stuff. Which is fine, since last weekend probably could fill our entertainment quota for this week as well.
Last Saturday we hopped on the MAX for a downtown date and hung out at the Tour de Fat shindig. New Belgium Brewing (makers of the luscious Fat Tire brew) is on a small tour of some select cities to encourage people to sign over their car title in exchange for a shiny new bike in an attempt to "become a part of the pollution solution" and "wean yourself off the petroleum teat."
Portland is probably a no-brainer stop on such a jaunt and for good reason. Quite the party...largely thanks to Portland's own March Fourth Marching Band. What a show! Check out a few pics and some quick video I snagged. I especially like the banners with the cars swallowed by flames and the angelic bicycles rising above the carnage. I think it was a good date.

Currently Reading

About ten chapters in and all I can say is...wow (that jaw-dropping, "I can't believe this is non-fiction" kind of wow -- kind of like the first time I read extensively about Scientology). So far, I think this book can be sumarized by the following quote:
"It is almost impossible to write fiction about the Mormons, for the reasons that Mormon institutions and Mormon society are so peculiar that they call for constant explanation." -Wallace Stegner
Recently Finished

A book I've been meaning to read for quite some time and finally made it a priority. A heart-breakingly beautiful story. It's been a long time since I've chosen to read a book that I knew might make me cry and it delivered in the least-cheesy way imagineable. I can't believe this is Hosseini's first novel and I can't wait to read his new one.

One of those spiritual classics that's been on my list for a long time. There were a couple of points where Nouwen's beliefs and my own diverged, not unlike my relationship with A.W. Tozer. However, much like "The Pursuit of God," this might be one of those slim volumes that I try to read once every year or two to keep things fresh.

The waiting is the hardest part...
Only about two more month's until the new Wes Anderson film debuts.

"He says the train's lost."
"How can a train be lost, it's on rails?"

Menomena got me thinking...
So I was online and checked out this hilariously eerie video from one of the greatest Portland bands, Menomena (check out 'Muscle 'N Flo')...
...and it got me thinking about the things I would like to do before I die. My sister's got a pretty groovy list on her blog of 40 things she wants to do before she turns 40. I think this is a cool idea and definately helps you narrow down all those pie-in-sky aspirations. However, in the spirit of the Menomena vid, what would you do if you knew you had, say, four hours to live?
My list thus far:
-Call family members
-Eat a large Schlotzky's sandwhich for once...with Katie
-Take out the trash ('cause who wants to leave a smelly place behind for all those mourners?)
-Write an order of service for my funeral, to include: dancing, fireworks, pole-vaulting, etc.
-Pray a bit
-Find and read the best short-story ever written
-Write an even better and shorter short-story...'cause I'm thinking there's no better inspiration than imminent death
What am I leaving out?
